1, 2, 3 - Anatomy, pathology and physiology of a State - cells

Image
Here we start our comparison between a living - human – body and a State . To understand how close we can relate them, we will begin by looking at what they are made of. We are likely to need a microscope, then. We will analyse structure, function and disease. Cells like individuals Cells are the fundamental basis of any living being. Nothing smaller or simpler than a cell can be living. If it lives, it is either a cell or made of cells. Similarly, in a State the fundamental unit is the individual. Nothing less than an individual person can be a working part of the State. And if it is part of the State, it is either a person, a group of people or a concept thought by people. Cells belonging to the same organism are very similar, sharing a common genetic background and all contributing to the same system; and yet can be very different, specialized in a variety of tasks, subject to a variety of stimuli and stresses. For very similar reasons, just transposed in a different con...

Anatomy, physiology and pathology of a State

Image
A State and an animal body are two examples of very complex systems. They are both composed of units organized on different levels. Those units are required to efficiently cooperate for the wider system to survive. Given the similarities between the State and a - human - body, the second has already been used as an allegory to describe the first 1 , 2 .      Here, I will apply definitions from biology and medicine as metaphors to concepts of politology. When describing a living being, both at microscopical or macroscopical level, three main aspects can be distinguished: i) its anatomy, or how it is physically made;  ii) its physiology, or how it works; iii) its pathology, or how it gets disfunctional.      All those aspects are directly interlinked and dependent on each other, bearing strict cause-effect relationships. On these basis, I am going to identify the correspondences between multiple organs and systems of a human body and the fun...

Western high morals are covers for international realpolitik

Image
Sometimes, it happens that the West gets involved in wars. Chiefly, USA and States part of EU intervene in some conflicts (or even cause the escalations in first place, most notoriously in Iraq, 2003). The West even handpicks which wars are worthy of attention (through mass media) and of military intervention, and which not. In fact, States in the West acts on the basis of (supposed) higher morals, as the keepers of justice and the watchers over human rights in the world. Throughout history we built our apparent moral superiority An alliance was the pragmatic thing to do, and also sold as the moral one. But give it a few years and an Iron Curtain... This attitude was largely built over the last decades, first inheriting the system of values that permeated the Second World War. While fighting fascism in various forms during the War, it was 'easy' and of course convenient to label the Axis Powers as evil and the Allies as good . While not unjustified - ...

How and why the West supports Muslim extremists – a double-edge sword

Image
First of all, happy New Year everyone.     Unfortunately, we closed our 2017 fearing terror attacks. It has not been the first year this happens.     Then let us ask ourselves: are Muslim extremists a threat?     The honest answer is yes .     After the 9/11/2001, in theory the War on Terror was an attempt to answer some of the actions they inspired and carried out.      However, the War lead to even more instability in the Middle East and in the world at large.     Something did not work out. How? Why?     Was - and is - the West really serious and dedicated to fight and counter Muslim extremists? Muslim integralists' communities in Western cities First, let's consider what happens in our own cities. There are many communities inspired to fundamentalist teachings of the Quran all through Western countries. These communities are tolerated to varying degrees. They are Muslim enclaves in W...
